Douglas Leonard Benc Sr Douglas Leonard Benc Sr passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thurs. Oct. 25, 2012 in Bakersfield. Born in Visalia on July 10, 1942, Doug was a longtime Tulare County resident and attended George McCann School and Mt. Whitney High. Doug joined the US Army and served in Virginia and Italy as a military policeman before joining the California Department of Corrections and later the Tulare County Sheriff's office, before retiring in 1993. Doug loved to share his knowledge, which drove him to acquire a teaching credential and to take a job with WESTEC in Taft as a correctional peace officer instructor. Known for his dry sense of humor, Doug also loved to write poetry and took extraordinary pride when some of his work was published. His parents, Carl and Odessa, his sister Audrey Lugo and his son Matthew preceded Doug in death. His sister Bobby Barrow and Virginia Washington and son's Doug Jr., Daniel and David as well as his stepdaughters Brandi and Kimber survive Doug. Doug also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Samantha, Jacque, Jacob, Logan, Ally, Christopher, Justin, Savannah and Caleb as well as Makayla, his only great grandchild. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Doug. Graveside services will be at 11 am at the Tulare Cemetery at 900 E. Kern Ave. on Friday, Nov. 2 , 2012.
