Edward Schlick Obituary

Architect, Farmer, Community Pillar, & Devoted Family Man Edward Ray Schlick was born in Los Angeles to Ruby and Ray Schlick, Sr. on July 6, 1926. He spent two years in the Navy, studied business at UCLA, and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture in 1953. In college, he met the love of his life, Frances Winton, of Ivanhoe. They were married August 22, 1953. Ray and Fran settled down in Studio City where Ray began his architectural career which continued strong until a month before his death. In 1963, Ray, Fran and their daughter, Alison, moved to Ivanhoe to help Fran's aging parents with the family ranch. Shortly after relocating, E. Ray Schlick established himself as one of the top architects in the valley. He and seven partners formed Octagon Associates in the early 70's. During his career he designed hundreds of homes, commercial buildings, educational institutions, medical centers, and churches. Some of his more recognizable projects include the Visalia Medical Clinic, the Depot, the COS Amphitheatre, and the Chinese Cultural Center. Ray was a pillar to the community by volunteering his time and talent to help enrich Visalia culturally. He was an active Rotarian who gave generously to help others. Hundreds of groups and organizations were blessed during Ray's 57 years of community involvement. Most recently, Ray was involved in Arts Visalia, Rotary Foundation, the Visalia Symphony Foundation, the Tulare County Library Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Ivanhoe. Ray enjoyed an active and full life which included traveling the world with his wife, playing racquetball, designing buildings, farming on his ranch, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Frances Winton Schlick of Ivanhoe; daughter, Alison Miniaci of Visalia, son-in-law, Verne, and granddaughter Marisa Rae; and son, David Schlick of Tulare, daughter-in-law, Saan, and four grandchildren, Kinlee, Rebekah, Erik, and Mikah. Ray passed away on Tuesday, November 23 at Kaweah Delta after a five-week bout stemming from lung complications. A memorial ceremony will be held at the Visalia Methodist Church on Saturday, December 4 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that Ray's spirit of generosity be kept alive by making a donation in his name to one or more of the organizations listed above.

I had the priviledge to play racquetball and participate on many community projects over the course of 3 decades with Ray and I will miss his smile, laugh, intellect and spirit he brought to all that he did. My goodness how proud the Family must be of how Ray lived his life: passionately, chartible and with great thoughtfulness. We all have lost a genuine Friend and the community has lost a Father.

Fran and family,
I remember one time when you and Ray let me visit you. You were living in an apartment then, and Ray had a car with a "rumble seat". I thought that seat was so "cool." I still smile when I think of Ray in that car.
We're thinking of you all and share your sorrow.

Fran and family,

I wanted to send a card to you, Fran, when I heard that Ray was in the hospital. But, before I could do that (was out of town) we received this very sad news. I am so very sorry. He seemed to be in such good physical condition that this really comes as a shock. David and I are so grateful that we had that time in Monterey with you, Fran and Ray. I've always appreciated both of you very much.

I regret that we will not be able to be with you on Saturday. David has an art show he is committed to in the morning and Messiah rehearsal then performance in Porterville in the afternoon. With only one car, I'll also be unable to be there for you. But, know that our hearts go out to you and you are in our thoughts every day. Be kind to yourselves, take your time to heal. With much fondness for Ray and you, Fran. Evelyn Smith

I was very lucky to be able to work with Ray on some great projects. He always had a clear vision of how it should be but was also willing to listen to other ideas. I especially enjoyed working with him on the Haworh home and on Arts Visalia. He was a lovely, talented and generous man. I will miss him.

I can't think of how many times clients told me that their architect wouldn't listen to them, or thought he knew better what they wanted than they did. I'd always respond with, "You need Ray Schlick. He won't do that!" And they always found out I was right about Ray. Each one was a convert after spending just a small amount of time with him on their building plans. Using his plans always allowed me to do remodels that stood the test of time and gave families just what they wanted. He was such a patient and easy to work with person. I'll miss him much. My best memory was one year when the home tour was conducted and out of four homes, two ended up being ours. No one planned that, but I could tell he was as proud of that accident as I was. I remember him saying, "I saw all fourl and ours are the best!" I'm proud to have worked with Ray Schlck, the Grand Pooh-bah of Vislia's architects.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Schlick family and Ray's many friends. I knew Ray only professionally when he supported a GSA leasing transaction we pursued, but he was a consummate professional with a larger than life heart. His wit, humor, and generosity will be missed.

I was privileged to know Ray only in the last year as he volunteered to design the new Boys & Girls Club being built in Ivanhoe. It seemed to me that Ray was very excited about the opportunity to donate his time and play a part in creating something important for Ivanhoe's youth. I enjoyed Ray's attitude so much - I experienced gentleness, generosity, and a willingness to do whatever was required to get this job done. My many requests for changes and additions to the plans were always received by Ray with a gracious and positive response. My condolences to Ray's family and friends - I know you are missing him terribly. He was a great man.

Dear Fran and Family
Shocked doesn't come close to how we felt when we read the news of Ray's passing. Having been friends and neighbors for a lifetime, we do not have the words to adequately share with you. Fran, you and I go back to when were growing up and our families were friends. Ray was a truly remarkable man but we need not tell you. He designed our home and his special touches are a joy to us every day. He designed our front entrance twice. The second time to accomodate a door we fell in love with and had shipped from Bali. He made it fit perfectly. His reasoned counsel on several of our projects has been invaluable. Our thoughts are with you and we are here for you in any way possible now and later. We wish you God's continued blessings. Bob and Ann McKellar, Ivanhoe

Dear Fran

Ray has always been an inspiration and a pleasure to work with. I will miss friendship and knowledge. At the age of 84 he was more active in his profession and the community than most. I want to extend my condolences to you and your family for he will sorely missed.

With deepest sympathy,
