Frank S. Mello went peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 13, 2016. He was surrounded by his family after battling lifelong health complications due to exposure of Agent Orange in Vietnam.
He was born in Hanford, CA to Joe L. and Virginia C. Mello, five minutes after his twin brother. He attended St. Aloysius, Oak Valley, graduated Tulare Western in 1965 and graduated from COS with an Associate of Science degree. March of 1966 he entered the US Army. After basic training he attended Wireman and Lineman school. He was originally deployed to Germany, then he was sent to Vietnam where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.
In 1972 he married Kimberly Shannon. They made their home in Tulare on the family ranch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe L. and Virginia C. Mello, sister and brother-in-law Mary/Rick Estridge, sister-in-law Roxie Mello, father-in-law Gary Shannon, and brother-in-law Donald Fritzler. He is survived by his wife Kimberly of 44 years and three children, Frank S. II (Victoria), Stephanie, and Jon-Michael (Ariane). His nine grandchildren, which he considered to be his proudest legacy, Jon-Michael Jr, Madalynn, Mary-Catherine, Isabella, Amelia, Gwendalynn, Christian, Audrey and DJ. "Papa" was their Hero and Mentor and now their Guardian Angel. He is also survived by his twin brother Joe, mother-in-law Ramona Shannon, brother-in-law Bruce (Jeanne) Shannon, sister-in-law Vicki Fritzler, brother-in-law Jeffrey Shannon (all of Tulare), and several nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held at Sterling Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 2p.m. to 5p.m. Rosary will be at St Aloysius Church, 125 E. Pleasant, Tulare, on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 6p.m. Funeral services to be held Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 10:30a.m. at St. Aloysius Church. Interment will be at the Tulare District Cemetery on Kern Street.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the St Aloysius Catholic School, 125 E. Pleasant Ave, Tulare, CA. 93274 or Project Wounded Warriors.
