Girlie Green Obituary
Girlie Green On Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, Girlie Green, (affectionally known as GG to many) passed away peacefully at the Kaweah Manor Nursing Home. She was 92. She was born May 20, 1920 in Pachuta, Miss. and was the youngest and last surviving member of nine children born to Emery and Ella (Price) Smith. She was named Cleo Catherine Smith, but her father, Pa Em, would always call her "little girl" thus the name Girlie stuck. She was educated in the Pachuta Public school system where she excelled in basketball. In 1935, she married Willie Lester Green who later retired from the Navy. They moved to Jackson, Miss. in 1939-40 and had three children: a daughter, Juanita June and two sons, George Emerson and Willie Lester (Jack) Green. There she worked in the school cafeteria and as a switchboard operator. In 1956, she moved to Visalia, Ca, arriving on a Greyhound bus with just a suitcase and a dream. For 20 years, she work as a domestic for St. Mary's Catholic convent, owned and operated Girlie's Hamburger King Restaurant at the corner of Houston and Court and owned and operated GG's Day Care until her retirement. In 1958, she joined Visalia Second Baptist Church, Visalia, Ca. Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, Church Treasurer, President of the Women's Missionary Union and Church Choir. She loved her Church and would often say: "I was Baptist born and I was Baptist bred and when I die, I'll be Baptist died". She was very proud of her family name reminding them that you are a Smith. Hold your head high and be proud of who you are and be loving and kind. She is preceded in death by her son George, daughter Juanita and leaves her son Jack, grandchildren Robert and Parnell and great grandson Theodore, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Girlie will always be known as everyone's mother or grandmother because of her loving, gentle nature. We will miss her very much. Girlie has requested no service. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to her beloved Visalia Second Baptist Church, 935 West Harold Street, Visalia, CA 93291. Please add Girlie Green in memo section of the check. "A precious one is gone, but her love lingers on."
