Jose Velazquez Ramirez Jose Velazquez Ramirez, 90, of Woodlake, California passed away on November 26, 2012 at Kaweah Delta District Hospital in Visalia, California of natural causes. Jose was born on March 1, 1922 in Santa Paula, California to Julian Ramirez and Victoria Velazquez. He grew up around the Oxnard area and as a young man worked in the fields to help support his family. Jose enlisted in the United States Army on February 18, 1943 and served two years during World War II. He was the recipient of the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, EAME Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and one Overseas Service Bar. Jose was discharged in 1945, achieving the rank of Gun Crewman Heavy Artillery 823. Jose began work for Ralph Montgomery of Exeter, California from December 1945 to March 1951 as a Fruit Harvester. On March 14, 1951, Jose enlisted for a second term of three years with the United States Army. He went to Basic Airborne Training in Fort Benning, Georgia. His duty assignment was with CO "H" 505th Abn Inf Regt. He received the PRCHT Badge Par 24 SO 88 HQ TIC and the National Defense Service Medal. He discharged on March 22, 1954. Jose worked for John F. Knight as Ranch Foreman for 23 years, retiring in 2000. Jose married Mary Helen Banuelos in 1965 in Woodlake, California. They were happily married for 45 years, raising two children. During summer months you could find him in his vegetable garden or watering his citrus trees. He most enjoyed watching his grandkids grow. Jose is preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters, Lupe Ramirez and Amparo Macias; one brother, Lucio Ramirez. Mary Helen preceded him in death 2010. Mr. Ramirez is survived by his two sons, Joe Nevarez and Andy Ramirez, both of Woodlake; five grandkids: Elizabeth M. Ramirez of Rhode Island, Andy Jr., Samuel and Xavier Ramirez, all of Visalia and Isabella Ramirez of Visalia. He is also survived by a nephew whom he raised and considered his son, Joe Sul and wife, Gloria of Campbell, CA. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2012 from 3 - 5:30 p.m. at Miller Memorial Chapel, 134 E. Cypress in Woodlake. Recitation of Rosary will follow immediately at 6 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church of Woodlake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 9 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Woodlake District Cemetery.
