Leah Patricia Heard March 22, 1950-July 18, 2012 After battling Leukemia, Leah succumbed to complications from chemotherapy. She passed peacefully with her family at her side. Leah was born in Lindsay, California where she grew up and spent most of her youth and graduated from Lindsay High School. She met her husband, Joe Heard at Strathmore First Baptist Church and they were married on June 27, 1969. They later made their home in Porterville where they raised their family. Leah would later earn a multiple-subject teaching credential and taught 3rd grade at Westfield Elementary for 22 years. Leah was the older of two daughters of Mary Lucille "Lou" Watkins and the late Marlowe "Mike" Hammer and was the beloved wife of Joe Heard for over 43 years. She will forever be remembered by her devoted sisters Mary Hammer of Bakersfield and Janice Eaton of Sacramento, beloved children Kenneth and Jessica Heard, Terry and Sandy Heard, and Amber Heard, treasured grandchildren Breana, Lauren, Chloe, Michael, Katelyn, and Cody, dear friends Lyn and Keith Honeycutt, and countless other friends and family whom were blessed to have known her. After her retirement, Leah took full advantage of her opportunity to reacquaint herself with her love of horses, took numerous trips with her husband and friends for NASCAR weekends, and spent as much time as she could at the family cabin at Hume Lake Christian Camps. It was during this time that her passion for photography was reawakened. As her many Facebook friends can attest, Leah was proud to share with the world the many beautiful things she was seeing through the eye of her camera. In her last year, Leah was challenged by a diagnosis of Leukemia. Throughout this struggle, Leah displayed the good humor and high spirits that she was always known for. While inspiring many with her strength and courage even in the darkest of times, she wanted people to know that her faith in Jesus Christ was what made it possible. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 10 am at Porterville Nazarene Church at Olive and Matthew. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hume Ministries, 5545 E Hedges Ave, Fresno, CA 93727.
