Mary C. Gates Our beloved mother and grandmother, Mary C. Gates, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2012, at the age of 85 surrounded by her loving children. Her last two years were spent near her attentive daughter and son at a memory care home in Pleasant Hill, CA. Mary Wright Cloe was born in 1926 in Stafford County, Virginia, to William and Elizabeth Cloe. She grew up on a farm that had been in the family for generations and left home at age 16 to attend Mary Washington College and the nursing program at Emergency Hospital in Washington, D.C., from which she graduated in 1948. It was at Emergency Hospital that she met her future husband, John Gates, who was a medical student at the time. They were married in November of 1949 and began a 56-year marriage filled with love and devotion to family and friends. In 1953 they moved to Visalia, where John started his medical practice, and together they raised five children. During this time Mary began what would become five decades of service to St. Paul's Episcopal Church and 36 years of participation in the Nurses' Health Study. In 1974 Mary returned to nursing. Her passion for nurturing, and her loving and caring manner, were exhibited daily throughout her 12 years at Visalia's Kaweah Delta Hospital. As a nurse manager, she was a tireless advocate for patients and staff. After retiring she volunteered for the Hospice of Tulare County (now Kaweah Delta Hospice), and, in her final years in Visalia, devoted herself to caring for her beloved husband, who passed away in 2005. Mary Gates is survived by her brother, John Haile (Susan); her children, David (Judy), Susan (David), John (Susan), Richard (Derinda) and Mary Lee (Debbie); her grandchildren, Moses, Rivka, Micah, Matthew, Emily, Elisha, Sarah (Fred); great-grandchild Oscar and many wonderful lifelong friends. In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her son, James Samuel, and her brother, Bill Cloe. Our family wishes to thank the staff of Kaweah Home Health Care, Chateau at Poet's Corner and Hospice of the East Bay for their compassion and respect. The care Mary received during the final chapter of her life was exceptional. As a hospice nurse herself, she would have been proud of her family and caregivers for their loving care and support. The service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Congregation B'nai David Synagogue, 1039 Chinowth in Visalia, at 1:00 Sunday November 4, 2012. Reception will follow at the family home in Visalia. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Hospice of Tulare County Foundation, 900 W. Oak Avenue, Visalia, Ca. 93291 or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church c/o Rev. Suzy Ward. P.O. Box 7446, Visalia, Ca. 93277.
