When she was 9 years old, and the country was in the midsts of The Great Depression, the family moved to California. Soon after they were married they had their son, who would be the first of four children to become the love of Mary Jo's life. They later moved to Tulare, and in 1960 the family moved to Visalia where Tom and Mary Jo bought their home together. Throughout her life Mary Jo worked several jobs at various packing houses, at Hammer Machinery, as a receptionist at Optometrist Dr. Nephian's office, and later at Bateman Hearing Aide, where she spent 20 years.
