Reverend Phil Akin Retired Pastor, Reverend Phil Akin, went home to be with the Lord on July 4th in Visalia. Pastor Akin was an Ordained Bishop with the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) serving in many capacities over his 47 years of ministry including: State Evangelist, member of the State Youth Board, Assistant Pastor and Pastor of churches in, Ventura, Wasco, Ridgecrest, Shafter, Bakersfield, and most recently Porterville from 2000 to 2011. Pastor Akin was born November 26, 1947 in Marked Tree, Arkansas to Rev. George A. Akin and Clara Marie Rider Akin. He was the youngest of 4 children. His family moved to California shortly after his birth and he spent his youth in the San Joaquin Valley towns of Hanford, Poplar, and Clovis where his Father and Mother ministered. In 1967, the Akin family moved to Santa Paula, California to pastor and that is where Phil met the love of his life, Gayle Allen, and they were married on April 6, 1968. Reverend Akin leaves behind his bride Gayle of Tulare; son and daughter in law Jeff and Shelbie Akin of Porterville; daughter and son in law Annette and Ray Austerman of Tulare; five grandchildren: Kaedryn, Grace, and Riley Akin and Bailey and Brooke Austerman; his brother and sister in law Ed and Dixie Akin of Reedley; and sister and brother in law Janice and Bob King of Visalia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Rev. George and Marie Akin of Visalia and sister, Ruth Woods of Santa Paula. Viewing will be held from 3pm to 7pm, Tuesday, July 10th at Miller Memorial Chapel in Visalia. Service will be at 11am, Wednesday July 11th at the Porterville Church of God (940 W. Jubilee Lane Porterville, CA 93257) with internment to follow at the North Tulare Cemetery. Condolences may be offered at www.millerchapel.com.
