Thomas P. Vander Maarl Vander Maarl Trucking Owner On September 18, 2013, God saw it was time to call home His faithful follower Tom Vander Maarl. Tom was diagnosed with cancer 19 months ago and lived his remaining days with peace and joy. He knew he was going to experience a homecoming when he arrived in heaven and we know we will see him again. Tom was born September 2,1951, to Pete and Jennie Vander Maarl and grew up in the Bellflower area. After graduation, he decided to follow in his late father's footsteps and become a truck driver, driving for Keeney Truck Lines and C & D Transportation. In 1976, he purchased his own truck and Vander Maarl Trucking was born again. He operated it until months before his death, driving until his health would not allow him. Tom enjoyed driving and never considered it work. He had made many friends at the various places he loaded and unloaded. In 1974, Tom married the love of his life, Glenda Zeilstra, and they enjoyed 39 years together. They lived in Bellflower, Norco and in 1990 moved their family to the central valley to continue hauling feed commodities for the local dairymen. They were blessed to have three children, Kory, Kris and Tami. Tom was a loving husband, great Dad and the best Pop you could find. He spent many years coaching his kids in soccer and baseball and watching whatever activity they were in. He was their biggest fan. He adored his grandchildren and they were always excited to come ride with Pop in his truck, pick fruit or play with him. He loved watching them, their baseball games, soccer games and swim meets. Seeing the grand kids in school and church programs was a joy to him. "3 John 4 .. A man has no greater joy than to know his children walk in the way of the Lord .. " Tom was a lifelong member of the Reformed Church of America. In 1999, along with a group from Tulare Community Church, Tom and Glenda helped start Sunrise Community Church and he remained on the board there. He served in many different positions at each church, his favorite was being the "candy man" to all the kids. He will be missed by his wife, Glenda, and his children: Kory and Natalie, Kris and Lisa, and Tami and Jacob. He hopes his grandkids, Erika, Haley, Phillip, Alyvia and Beckham will always remember that their Pop loved them very much. He is also survived by his mother, Jennie, and his siblings, Martha, DeeDee, Jennie, Gary, Cindy and Jon Alan, his aunt Gertie Lootsma, along with cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Tulare Community Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunrise Community Church, PO Box 1319, Tulare, CA 93275. Private burial. Condolences may be e-mailed to email@example.com
