Van R.Parkinson Pharmacist Van R. Parkinson of Grover Beach, CA, formerly a longtime Visalia, CA resident, passed away peacefully in San Luis Obispo, CA from a brief and sudden illness on May 8, 2012, with his family by his side. He was 77 years old. Van was born on September 13, 1934 to Fred and Yvette Parkinson in Rexburg, Idaho and came from a long line of Mormon pioneers, of which he was very proud. After graduating from high school in 1952, he served in the Army and then served as a missionary in the Central East States mission for the LDS church. Upon his return, he attended Idaho State University earning a B.S. in pharmacology. Van married Leila Henry in 1958 and they had four children. They divorced in 1978. Van then married Esther Spires, had one child and divorced. Van then married Patricia McKinney and they had two children. They later divorced. Van began his long career as a pharmacist in 1962 and worked at several drug stores before purchasing Switzer's Drug Store in Visalia in 1967. Later the drugstore moved and became Kaweah Pharmacy. In 1985 he moved the pharmacy to his own building, presently the Pill Box Pharmacy. He enjoyed talking with his customers and knew many by their first names. In 2008 he retired and moved to Grover Beach, CA. Van was very talented at repairing multiple things and enjoyed restoring cars. He had a love for family and small dogs. He liked outdoor activities with his family, such as, boating, water skiing, camping, riding ATV's, traveling, and fishing. He had a strong love for Idaho and traveled there frequently to visit family. More recently, he enjoyed taking walks on the beach, attending church, and eating at Finn's Restaurant in Grover Beach. Van was a dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend who will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Fred and Yvette Parkinson, brothers Devere Parkinson and Reid Parkinson. He is survived his children: Vanda Kennedy, Shane Parkinson, Denise Standing (David), Daniel Parkinson, Mark Parkinson Cindi Parkinson and Jodi Parkinson; grandchildren: Landen, Hannah, and Logan. He is also survived by brothers Fred Parkinson (Nola), Lyle Parkinson (Marlene), a sister, Donna Cherry and numerous family members. Funeral services will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints Chapel at 4000 W. Caldwell Ave, Visalia, CA on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at the Visalia District Cemetery. A private viewing will be he held for family and close friends on May 20, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. Arrangements under the direction of Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel.
