Raoul A. Gomez Electrical Technician Raoul Gomez, 71, of Visalia passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Raoul was born in Porterville, CA on June 9, 1942. He was the 3rd born in a family of 10 children. Being born into a farm labor family, he moved a lot as the family followed the crops. His oldest sister and he used to go and work in the fields with their dad as their mother stayed home to take care of the younger brothers and sisters. Times were rough financially, and by the time Raoul was 15, he wanted to quit high school to try to get a more permanent job to help the family. But his mom would not let him quit school and pushed him to work harder in school so he could succeed in the future. Raoul stayed in school and worked summer jobs and weekends doing various jobs such as working the fields, building construction and fighting forest fires. After high school, Raoul started college, but shortly decided to join the Navy where, in their schools, he became an Aviation Electronic Tech. After 4 years in the Navy (his service was extended due to Vietnam War), he got out and moved back to Porterville. In 1968, Raoul married Donna Murray. This big step in his life made him think about what he had done and where he had been. So he figured he needed better for his family. He got a job with Southern California Edison started as a laborer, became an electrician and worked there for 30 years as he and Donna raised their four children. After retirement, Raoul enjoyed having more time for his grandchildren, playing golf with family and friends and then starting oil painting classes where he painted dozens of beautiful pictures. Private services may be held at a later date. A memorial tribute may be offered by logging onto www.salseranddillard.com
