Benito "Benny" Zayas Benny Gradillas Zayas, 84, of Tulare, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Madera Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born December 21, 1929 in Fullerton, California. Benny attended and graduated from Visalia (Redwood) High School in 1949. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent most of his tour in the Philippine Islands. After being discharged, he returned to Visalia where he met and married Ruth Gonzalez Zayas, now 82 years old. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on July 3, 2014. Benny worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Visalia, California for 25 years and retired in 1990. In addition to his wife, Benny is survived by his sister Lupe Soleno of Orosi; his brother Gilbert Zayas of Visalia; a daughter Susan Punton of Visalia; a son Benjamin Zayas of Monterey; a granddaughter Samantha Punton of Tulare; and a grandson Anthony Zayas of Monterey. Mass will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Visalia with burial following at Visalia District Cemetery. Arrangements are by Peers Lorentzen Funeral Service.
