Wallace "Wally" Byrd Obituary
Wallace "Wally" Byrd Wallace Fred Byrd, better known to his friends and relatives as Wally Byrd, passed away August 10, 2014 at the age of 92. Born in 1922, Wally was the only child of Rose and Fred Byrd. His childhood was spent on a ranch at the southwest corner of West St. and Inyo Ave. The area was known as "Byrd Dairy" to many of the old timers of Tulare. Wally attended Roosevelt Elementary, Central School and Tulare Union High School, graduating with the class of 1940. He went on to attend College of the Sequoias in Visalia for 1 year. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Cadet Army Air Corps. While waiting to be called to service, he married his high school sweetheart Clara Balaam. Upon completing his training, he graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant single engine pilot. He then attended instructor's school after which he taught Army Cadets in the art of gunnery to be fighter pilots. Wally completed his service at Las Vegas Army Air Base and was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant after 3 ½ years of service. He then returned to Tulare where he worked at various jobs and finally spent 30 years in the milk manufacturing business. Wally's wife spent 30 years as owner and operator of Claire's Beauty Salon. After they retired, they moved to Reedsport, Oregon for 17 years. They spent 3 to 6 months traveling in their motor home. Then in 2003, due to ill health, they returned to Tulare to be closer to their daughter. Wally was a Master Mason, a member of Aurora Lodge #59 in Reedsport, Oregon, a member of Martha Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #48 and also served as Worthy Patron along with his wife who served as Worthy Matron from 2002-2003. Wally served 6 years as Rainbow Dad International Order of Rainbow for Girls. He was a member of Reedsport Christian Church and served as Trustee and Deacon. In 2011, Wally was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Clara. He is survived by his daughter Carole Miller and her husband Ernie; 4 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Peers Lorentzen Funeral Service.
