Vernon Lee Porter went to be with the Lord on August 5, 2010 in Visalia, CA at the age of 87. As a child he contracted polio and had to learn to walk a second time. Now he is running and leaping with the Lord. Vernon was born March 24, 1923 in Neosho, Missouri , the seventh child to Orville and Maude Porter. The family moved to California and settled in Visalia when Vernon was a child. He graduated from Visalia High School in 1942. He married the former lva M. Lewis in Woodlake in February 1951. Vernon worked at Visalia Unified School District as a custodian for many years. After his retirement, Vernon attended COS and received his Associates Degree. He never missed a chance to cheer them on. Later in life he enjoyed playing golf with many friends. Vernon loved the Lord and served as a lay pastor at Linnell Camp. Vernon taught Sunday School for many years at First Baptist Church, now Gateway Church of Visalia. He challenged his students to grow in the Lord. He loved having his grandchildren with him in worship. He took great pride in the fact his two sons became ministers. Vernon was active in several service organizations including The Optimist Club, Visalia Rescue Mission and The Salvation Army. His favorite activity was ringing the bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army. Vernon loved meeting and talking with people. He was known for having an extremely firm handshake and a big smile.
