Melba Loyd Rauber Obituary
Melba Loyd Rauber Melba Loyd Rauber, 92, and a lifelong resident of Porterville, passed away at Delta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Visalia on January 14, 2013. Melba was born in Porterville, California, on March 20, 1920, to Carl and Ruby Loyd. Her father was the founder and owner of Loyd Funeral Chapel in Porterville until his death in 1929. Melba attended Porterville High School and graduated in 1937. She attended Pomona College for one year and then transferred to the College of Pacific in Stockton where she was a music major. A special part of her time at the College of Pacific was being in classes and developing a friendship with Dave Brubeck. She related many stories of how Dave was dramatically more innovative and creative than the other students in the music program. Melba met her future husband, F.S."Bud" Rauber in Portervillle where he was stationed in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. They were married in Porterville on August 31, 1946. Bud passed away at the age of 83 on November 29, 2002. Melba taught choral music for many years at Bartlett Junior High School in Porterville and later taught music and piano at Porterville Junior College. For over twenty years, she was accompanist for the Sierra Vocal Arts Ensemble with her former student, Fred Knutson. Melba often said that "music is my life" and it truly was very important to her. Melba is survived by her son, David, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen, of Visalia and her son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Margaret, of Visalia, her grandson, Christopher, his wife Kelly and great grandson, Connor, living in San Jose, her grandson, Patrick, and his wife, Kendra, living in Chicago, and her grandson, Eric, living in Camarillo. Melba was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Melissa Rauber, on November 14, 1997. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Delta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of Melba. Funeral services will begin with a visitation on Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Whitehurst-Peters-Loyd Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Porterville Followed by Internment at Vandalia Cemetery.
