Edward H. Janzen Educator Edward H. Janzen was born September 6, 1932 to Henry and Elizabeth Janzen at Hillsboro, Kansas. His parents moved to Mountain Lake, Minnesota when he was an infant. He was raised there and graduated from Mountain Lake High School. Ed was very active in music, drama and athletics while in high school. His coaches and teachers greatly influenced his choosing a profession in the field of education. Ed enjoyed a career in education for 55 years. His preparation began with a B.A. Degree in Science at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, a M.S. Degree from Emporia State University, a Pupil Personnel Credential in Counseling from Fresno State University, and an Administrative Credential from California State University at Bakersfield. Ed had a sincere passion to work with kids, young and old, throughout his life in various capacities. He was an elementary teacher and coach for two years in Kansas then moved to California where he was the Activities Director at Kings View Homes at Reedley before returning to education. In California, he taught and coached football, basketball and track at Orosi Elementary, Orosi High School, McFarland and Shafter High School. He served as Athletic Director and was also very active in C.I.F. Athletics serving a number of years on its board. In his contact with students, teaching and coaching, he was motivated to be a counselor. He was a counselor at Orosi High School and Shafter High School, Head Counselor at Redwood High School, and an Evening Counselor at the Visalia Adult School. Ed went into Administration as a Principal at Orosi High School, Superintendent/Principal and Director of Development at Immanuel High School in Reedley, Assistant Principal at Golden West High School, Supervisor of Curriculum at VUSD and Supervisor of Teachers at Chapman University. He felt very fortunate to have had all these opportunities working with people. He loved working with people. Ed enjoyed life. He was affectionately known as "Eddie J" by his close friends. Ed was an avid sports fan of Fresno State Basketball, the San Francisco Giants, LA Lakers, and SF 49'ers. For recreation, he was in three senior bowling leagues, and took pleasure in his various coffee groups and breakfast times with friends. A recent highlight for Ed was celebrating his 80th birthday! Ed believed in loving God with all his heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-39) and to love his neighbor as himself. He was dedicated to his church life by volunteering to teach classes, sing in the choir, serve on church boards, was co-chair of the Building Program of Neighborhood Church and volunteered for years in the maintenance of the facility. Ed also enjoyed participating in the newly formed Crossroads Community Church in Visalia. Ed is survived by his wife Marilyn of 59½ years, his children, Jacqueline and her husband Steve Awbrey of Irvine and Tom Janzen and his wife Martha of Santa Maria, his grandchildren, Robin Awbrey Smith and her husband Grant Smith of Irvine; Nicole Janzen of LaMirada and Ryan Janzen of San Luis Obispo. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. Ed passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2013. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Immanuel Schools Chapel, 1128 S. Reed Avenue, Reedley, CA.
