Helter S. Martins Comendador Helter S. Martins, 80, of Tulare passed away Friday, September 20, 2013. Helter was born in Terceira Acores, Portugal on January 8, 1933. He was married to Ercilia Martins of Tulare in 1975. He was an insurance agent. Helter Martins was a community leader and for many years advisor of the Portuguese community. He was Honorary Consul of Portugal. In 2011 he was recognized by the Society of Portuguese-American Students (S.O.P.A.S) as Most Valuable Portuguese-American and awarded SOPAS Portuguese-American Hall of Fame. Helter was Founder Member of Tulare Angrense Athletic Club, Sister City Foundation, Centro Portuguese de E. e Cultura, Filarmonica Portguesa de Tulare. He was member of Cabrillo Club Tulare, Elks club Tulare, LUSO-American and T.D.E.S. He was Immigrant of the year in 2004 and received recognitions from the Portugal government as well as many other organizations. Helter is survived by his wife Ercilia Martins, Tulare, sister Nidia Martins, Acores, brothers in law Helder Gomes, Portugal and Victor Gomes, Acores, sister-in-law Adroalda Gomes, Acores and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Helter is preceded in death by his daughter Christine G. Martins, and his parents Francisco and Libiania Martins. Helter was a loving husband, father and friend to many. He enjoyed spending time with his family very much. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home, 151 North "H" Street, Tulare, Ca. Recitation of the Rosary and Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 125 East Pleasant Avenue, Tulare, Ca., with burial at Tulare District Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Miller's Tulare Funeral Home.
