August Joseph Jahnke

AUGUST JOSEPH JAHNKE 1/4/1913 - 2/8/2014 August (Gus) Joseph Jahnke, 101, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 8, 2014. Gus was born on January 4, 1913, and raised on a farm in Illinois. He was one of five boys and two girls born to Herman and Martha Jahnke. He met and married the love of his life, Frances, and had two children, Norma and Melvin. He and Frances owned Jahnke's Cabins, Gas & General store in Chippewa Falls, WI. In 1950, Gus moved his family to California. He joined the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 364 where he worked his way up to Business Agent, then Business Manager and was a driving force in the building of the Local 364 on-site training center and hall in Colton. He was a proud 71 year member of the U.A. Gus and his wife retired to Victorville in 1977, where they built their home on Spring Valley Lake and also a vacation home in Fawnskin. He loved fishing, hunting and playing poker. After the passing of his wife, Gus moved to Emeritus Senior Living in Apple Valley and enjoyed visiting with his neighbors, cocktail hour on Friday nights and visits from his family. Gus is survived by his sister, Esther Thompson of Illinois, five grandchildren: Rene Holladay of Victorville, Rory (Annette) Holladay of Canyon Lakes, April Wolf, Summer (Jake) Sheffield, Autumn (Jeff) Palmer all of Big Bear City, 11 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 75 years, Frances; son, Melvin Jahnke; daughter, Norma Holladay; son-in-law, Harold Holladay; Grandson-in-law, Brian Wolf and grandson, Jeff Jahnke. We will miss him dearly. Services will be held on Saturday, February 15 at 11:00 am at Dickey Mortuary, Fontana.
