JOSEPHINE PETERSON 8/30/1917 - 3/14, 2014 Josephine Edna Moutray was born August 30, 1917 in Steelville Missouri, the third child of Harvey Moutray and Mattie Grace Moutray (Luck). Josephine graduated from Steelville High School in May 1935 as salutatorian. In 1936 Josephine moved to St. Louis and went to work as a nanny while attending night school. After completing her business school program she went to work in the home office of Weiss & Neuman Shoe Company, a ladies high style shoe and accessories chain in the Midwest. She was appointed Assistant Office Manager in 1944, a position she held until September 1953 when she relocated to Pasadena California. While traveling west on the train she met John Peterson, who would become the love of her life. John and Josephine were married on January 10th, 1954, and in February of that year they settled in Victorville. They bought a new home in the Tatum tract that month, which would be their home for more than fifty years. John and Josephine raised their two sons, Wayne and Warren in Victorville. John preceded Josephine in death in January of 1978. Josephine was active in First Baptist Church Victorville for many years, teaching Sunday School, leading Vacation Bible School, as a member of the choir, and volunteering in the office. After John's passing she took on the challenge of learning to drive, and with the freedom of a driver's license she expanded her horizons a little. In the 1980's she joined a bowling league for a few years and then joined the Victor Valley Federated Women's Club. As part of the Women's Club she served four terms as the club president as well as various other offices. She was also able to fulfill a long time dream and travel to the Holy Land and walk where her Savior walked. She was affectionately known as "Jo" and loved gardening and raised remarkable roses. Josephine is survived by her sons Wayne of Philomont, Virginia, Warren of Victorville. She is also survived by her grandchildren Andrew Peterson of Princeton New Jersey, Mark Peterson of Orange City Iowa, Wesley Peterson of Victorville, and Kelsey Peterson of Chico California. She is also survived by her brother, John L. Moutray of Stoutsville Missouri, and sisters Leliah Curless of St. Charles Missouri and Mattie Opal Tracy of Downey California. Memorial Services for Josephine are being coordinated by the Victor Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday, March 21st from 6 to 8 PM, a celebration of her life will be Saturday at 1:30 PM, Pastor Jack Hamilton officiating.
