MARILYN JEAN WANSTEN-MARTINEZ

MARILYN JEAN WANSTEN-MARTINEZ Marilyn Jean Wansten- Martinez, age 81, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Victor Valley Hospital, CA surrounded by her loving family. She resided in Apple Valley, CA with her husband, Juan Martinez Jr. Marilyn was born April 11, 1931, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Arthur Eckenberg and Agnes (Redmond) Eckenberg who preceded her in death, along with her brother Richard Eckenberg and her sister Rosemary Sousley. She resided most of her life in Kentwood, MI, where she raised six children with her husband of 43 years, Rev. Harry J. Wansten (deceased 1994). They moved to San Diego, CA in 1982, where they were very active at San Diego First Assembly of God. After Harry's passing, Marilyn moved to nearby Apple Valley, CA where two of her children resided. Marilyn founded the High Desert Widow and Widower Group (WOW) in 1999 and in 2000 she married Juan Martinez Jr. of Victorville, CA. Marilyn was publicly recognized as Senior Citizen of the Year for the High Desert area in 2000, was active in the WOW Group through 2009 and was known for her humor. She attended Grand Rapids Junior College, Davenport College and worked at Michigan Bell Telephone. She was a homemaker, worked many years at Muller's Shoes in Grand Rapids, and later became a legal secretary for the San Diego District Attorney's office before retiring after 15 years of service. She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Juan Martinez Jr. and her six children: Deborah M. Palmer of Greenville, MI; Michael J. Wansten of Phoenix, AZ; Mark J. Wansten (Lori) of Kentwood, MI; Nancy M. DeCou (Hal) of Summerlin, NV; Daniel J. Wansten (Rebecca) of Ada, MI; Donald J. Wansten (Estela) of Apple Valley, CA. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Eckenberg, of Temperance, MI, and sister, Anne Marie FitzMaurice of Yonkers, NY. Her 17 grandchildren include: Isaac Palmer, Heather Palmer, Matthew Wansten (Amber), Kristen Wansten (Jonathan), Josh Wansten (Sonya), Jamie Wansten, Ben Wansten, Steve Wansten, Jessica DeCou, Janelle [DeCou] White (Aaron), Joylynne [DeCou] Mitchell (Ramell), Christine [Wansten] Paulen (Justin), Michelle [Wansten] Rummelt (Terry), Anneliese Wansten, Angela Wansten, Nick Wansten, and Ryan Wansten (Shawna). Her 9 great grandchildren: Logan and Greyson Paulen, Mason and Cameron Rummelt, Cyress, Malachi and Elijah Mitchell, Scarlett Wansten and baby White on the way. Marilyn is also survived by the Martinez family she gained in her later years: Martha Morrison (Amanda and Jordan); Carmen and David Reid (Stephen DeLaCruz and Teresa); Irma Felix (Mario Felix, Rebecca and Jeremy Mutsch; Jeremiah, Daniel, Caleb); David and Rosemary Martinez (Daniel, Stephanie, Michael); Victor and Jennifer Martinez(Anthony, daughter Elizabeth, Joseph). Visitation and viewing is at 9:30am on Saturday, December 29, at Sunset Hills Chapel, 24000 Waalew Road, Apple Valley, CA 92307; (760) 247-0155; Service and Celebration of her life to follow at 10:30am. Her final resting place is next to Harry J. Wansten at Desert View Memorial Park, 11478 Amargosa Road, Victorville, CA 92392.
