MARTHA LOUISE COTTEN 2/2/1940 - 9/3/2013 Martha Louise Powells- Cotton was born on Feb. 2, 1940 to Raymond and Mattie Lee Powells in Memphis, Tennessee. This birth produced a fraternal twin named Mary, with whom she would be very close to throughout her life. Martha was educated in the Memphis public school system and graduated from Manassas High School in 1957. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age while attending Hopewell Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor L. M. McNeal. Martha relocated to California in search of greater economic opportunity. She would eventually expand her horizons by earning a bachelors degree in psychology from California State University, San Bernardino. She was a multi-talented person and would spend much of her subsequent years juggling work and motherhood as she raised her two children. She enjoyed family and used her culinary skills to bring the family together for Christmas dinners. She appreciated life and often spoke of her regard for the things of God and her place in his will for her life. Fate would allow her to share some of these values when she returned to Memphis as the keynote speaker at her high school graduating class reunion. Martha's zeal was diminished in her latter years due to the debilitating illness to which she succumbed. She departed this life on Sept. 3, 2013. Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers: Louis and Raymond Powells Jr., sisters: Flora Mae Foster and Ardelia Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memories, two children; Donald Lynn Powells of Las Vegas, NV., and Marnesta Cotten of Hesperia, CA; one sister Mary Louise Hayes of Victorville, CA; two brothers: Herman Powells of Inglewood, CA; and Charles Powells of Redford, MI; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. May you forever rest in God's everlasting peace and comfort. A memorial service will be held on September 20, 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Tuscola building, Tuscola Rd., Apple Valley).
