QUINTON "SAM" AREND 8/20/1935 - 12/5/2013 Quinton "Sam" Taylor Arend, 78, a resident of Barstow for 56 years, passed away Thursday Dec 5, 2013 in Barstow after suffering a heart attack and being hospitalized since late August. "Sam" as he was known by most, was born in Haskell, Texas on August 20, 1935. "Sam" entered the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, having served three years, much of which was in Korea. Upon being Honorably Discharged from the Marines, "Sam" having ended up in Barstow went to work for the Marine Corps Supply Center Fire Department for five years. He then hired on with the Barstow Fire Protection District, where he served the local community for ten more years. "Sam" worked numerous odd jobs on his off days from the fire departments to allow his wife to be able to stay home and raise their two children. He then changed careers, becoming a professional truck driver for Yellow Freight Systems for thirty years before retiring. Quinton was preceded in death by his wife Nola (Milligan) Arend, parents Albert and Bea (Johnson) Arend, brother Randy Arend along with great grand-daughters Allison and Ashley Heath. Surviving family includes daughter, Cindy (Mark) Franey of Barstow; son, Kurt (Elena) Arend of Las Vegas, NV.; Brother, David (Marge) Arend of Pomona; sister, Fern Gonzalez of Arizona; 9 grand children; 14 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be Thursday Dec 12, 2013 at 9 a.m. at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Rd, Barstow. Funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. at Mead Mortuary. Burial will conclude with a short graveside service at the Mt. View Memorial Park, 37067 Irwin Rd., where Quinton will once again and for the final time reunite with his wife Nola, whom he has always loved.
