WILLIAM R. KING 1/18/1927 - 10/8/2013 William R. King, passed quietly in the comfort of his home on October 8, 2013 at the age of 86. William was a forty-eight year resident of Barstow. Born in Topeka, Kansas, he was the youngest of 8 children. Growing up on a farm during the depression, he learned at a very young age the value of hard work. Throughout his life he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a desire to help others. At the age of 15 he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, but soon left to join the U.S. Navy
to serve his country during WWII
. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, William returned to his employment at the Santa Fe Railroad. His career as a Mechanical Training Instructor lasted a total of 42 years. William is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Leta King of Barstow; he is also survived by three children: Kathy Moon of Lake Forest CA, Daniel King of Anchorage, Alaska and Cindy Nirenberg of Rancho Santa Margarita CA; he was predeceased by his son, David King of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. William was blessed to have five grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly. William was happiest when surrounded by family. He was a man of honor, integrity, humility, hard work, and his word was his bond. Always looking to help his family and friends, William was often seen with a ready tool kit. He took great pleasure in fixing anything that was broken and loved to create new tools to solve mechanical problems. He loved working in his garage, and was no stranger to grease and sawdust. He was happiest after a full day of honest hard work. Those who knew him will remember his quick smile, kind spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand. A memorial service of William's life will be held on Monday, October 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Mead Mortuary 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow, California. There will be an Honor Guard interment at Mt. View Cemetery, followed by a reception at Mead Mortuary. Those wishing to honor him may do so by contributing to a worthy cause, doing someone a kindness, or simply spending time with those they love.
