FRANK MURGUIA Frank C. Murguia, 91, was born on April 2, 1921 in Santa Paula, CA., and passed away in Barstow on January 10, 2013 at the Veterans Home. He was a resident of Barstow for 61 years. Frank was a veteran of World War II and served his country in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman and fought in the Battle of Okinawa (the largest U.S. military amphibious assault of the Pacific war against Japan) where he was seriously wounded and awarded the Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Frank was part of a three man mortar team when the enemy began a heavy attack on Frank's mortar team position. Frank and his team moved to a nearby bomb crater for protection where they took a direct mortar hit. The two soldiers on both sides of Frank were killed instantly. Frank lived but took shrapnel wounds to the face and a finger on his right hand was severed by shrapnel. Frank was transferred to a U.S. Navy hospital ship where he stayed for 5 months. Frank was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He retired from the Marine Corps Logistic Base after 25 years. His favorite pastime was taking photographs of his family and friends, collecting, repairing, and selling cameras, reading and listening to his favorite Big Band Sounds. He was hard-working, honest and well loved by all. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; his brother, Octaviano Murguia; his sister, Cecelia Acosta; and his grandchild, Rita McKernan. He is survived by his sister, Jovita Pina of Ventura, CA.; his three children, daughter, Frances (George) Ramirez, his son, Robert (Cruzita) Murguia and his daughter, Betty (Gene) Stricklin; seven grandchildren, George Ramirez Jr., of Ventura, CA., Stephanie Rubio of Thousand Oaks, CA., Christine Rodriguez of Barstow, CA., Michael Reyes of Williamsburg, VA., Celeste Hampton of Lawton, OK., Tony Stricklin of Portland, OR., and Michelle Goulding of Illsheim, Germany; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great- grandchildren.
