KATHERINE V. HUGHES 7/2/1926 - 3/20/2014 Katherine Virginia Hughes was born July 2nd, 1926 in Ore Grande. She went home to visit the Lord Thursday, March 20th, 2014. Katherine was well known by many in Barstow for her cooking. She worked for Del Fried Chicken, where she developed the yeast roll recipe. She also worked for the University of California Cooperative Extension Services Nutrition Program, where she went into the homes of local families to teach them nutrition and how to prepare healthy and inexpensive meals for their families. This enabled her to share her passion for cooking with the local community. In addition to her paying jobs, Katherine spent many years of service with St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she taught children about the love of the Lord. She was strong in her faith and shared the Lord's teachings with grace. She was generous and kind to all that crossed her path. She welcomed everyone into her home and no one ever left hungry. Many people in the community referred to her as the Mexican Betty Crocker. Katherine was a hard worker. No task was ever too big to be accomplished in her eyes, whether it be catering a wedding or weeding the garden. She loved the peaceful early mornings and the beauty of Mother Nature. She had a feisty personality and loved to laugh with her family and friends. She is survived by nine siblings: Donato Ramirez Jr., Jennie Chavez, Hortensia Miller, George Ramirez and Art Ramirez of Barstow; Lou Gonzalez and Genevieve Ramirez of Apple Valley; Charlotte Bricker of Hesperia; Mary Smith of Farmersville. She is survived by all of her children: son AC Hughes Jr.; son John and Donna of Barstow; son David of Apple Valley; son Tom and Kathy of Apple Valley; daughter Kathy of San Diego; son Richard and Rhonda of Lake Isabella; son Steven of Barstow; and son Fred of Livingston, Texas. She is survived by twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: John II (Shelby and Taylor), Aaron (Bailey and Parker), Michael, Tana, Travis, Jessica (Jaynee), Jordan (Brenyn), Brenda, Tami, Robert, Ashley (Hallie) and Ariel. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband AC Hughes, parents Donato and Augustina Ramirez, brothers Felix, John, Tommy, Andrew, and Salvador Ramirez and most recently her grandson Jason Hughes. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 28th, 2014 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 505 East Mountain View St., Barstow, CA. A rosary and visitation will begin at 9:00am followed by the mass. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park, 37067 Irwin Road in Barstow. Arrangements for the service have been entrusted to Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow. Flowers can be sent to St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
