FERMIN TORRES 4/12/1925 - 4/30/2014 Fermin Torres, a resident of Barstow since 1955, passed away at his home on April 30, 2014. He was born April 12, 1925 in Progreso, New Mexico, to Jose Antonio and Juana Andria Torres. He spent most of his childhood in Punte de Auga, N.M., surrounded by a large family and extended family. Fermin served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 receiving awards for his service including the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal. On December 29, 1950, he married Margarita Rival in Manzano, New Mexico. They had five children. Fermin worked at Camp Irwin and the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow from 1955 until his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his daughters, Jeanie Zavala, and Marie Quiroz and her husband, Johnny Baca of Barstow; sons, Eusebio, Macario, Patrick of Sherman Oaks, Ca.; grandchildren, Eusebio Zavala, and his wife, Maricela, Margie Zavala Najera and her husband Robert, Angelique Golden and her husband, Tony, and Juan Quiroz and his wife, Jodi; great-grandchildren, Isabel, David, and Liliana Zavala, Robert and Joseph Najera, Sophia and Benjamin Golden, and Johnny Quiroz; siblings, Eloy Torrez of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Abeyta of Santa Fe, N.M. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margarita Rival Torres; parents, siblings, Teresa Sanchez, Daniel Torrez, Elvira Gonzales, and Oralia Chacon; son-in-law, Leopoldo Zavala; and grandson, Leopoldo Zavala Jr.. Services will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Barstow, with Rosary at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memorial Park, at 11 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Horizon Memorial Services of Barstow.
