"Grandma Lynn" is how most people will remember her. Age 87, just 12 days shy of her 88th birthday, she died after a long struggle with heart and lung failure with her granddaughter Bethany and husband Chris by her side. "In hope of eternal life, which God that cannot lie, promised before the world began" Titus 1:2. Her life span was October 29, 1921 - October 17, 2009. Born in Guelph, Quebec, Canada as Lillian Eileen Thornton she was orphaned at the tender age of 3 years old and she did not have a place to call home until she married at the age of 26, but that was to be for only 15 years. With 3 daughters, JoAnne, Barbara and Paula, she loved being a mother and making beautiful doll clothes and dresses that looked alike for her girls to wear. She didn't know it then, but her very special talent to make doll clothes would lead to a career as a teddy maker which she often clothed in intricate and beautifully handmade clothing. Everyone that knew her loved her childlike wonder of the beauty of the world around her and the way she put so much personality into her teddy bears. As an award winning Teddy Bear Artist she was able to share her inner child with thousands of men, women and children. Her special trademark is a fanci-worked flower on one of the paws of each teddy bear she created. So many lives have been greatly touched by her loving ways, kindness and incredible enthusiasm for the simple things in life. She was beautiful and loved dressing and adding at least 3 necklaces to each outfit, with an artistic flair that most of us do not possess. The way she would collect the fall leaves and be very indignant if her trees lost any limbs. The way she would carefully touch and appreciate even the most inexpensive little animal or children keepsakes she would find. There was always a very sad and lonely and frightened little girl deep inside of her but traveling to Bear and Doll Conventions, which included London, England, Schaumsberg, PA, Disney World, to name a few were so exciting for her and she made so many friends. The Teddy Bear world has lost a treasure and she will be missed by all who knew her. Grandma Lynn Teddy Bears are on display at the Heartland Museum, Artist Teddy Bear Exhibit. She has a page in the Teddy Bear Calendar of 2000, the Teddy Bear Book of England and exclusive articles in the Teddy Bear Magazine. She also won the Toby Award for her exquisite design of the small bear in handmade clothing. Surviving her are daughters; JoAnne Winslow and Paula Orchowski, granddaughters; Jennifer Verhagen, Bethany Jamison, Erika Johnson: grandchildren Gary Hews, Tim Hews; great grandchildren, Roman Novell, Jordan Novell, Alex Coffey, Christopher and Anthony Jamison. Also, Lillyanne and Jacob Hews. In lieu of flowers the family gratefully requests that you donate to your favorite childrens cause in the name of Lynn E. Lumley "Grandma Lynn" A Celebration of Life to be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 1:30PM at the Sierra View Mobile Home Park, 10200 Johnson Rd. Phelan, CA in the recreation room.
