SHIRLEY L. VAUGHN Shirley L. Vaughn, 76, passed away in the hospital on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 in Barstow, Calif. Born and raised in Mississippi, Shirley later moved to California where she lived the rest of her life. Shirley was a proud union member, working at McCormick Shillings in Salinas, Calif. for many years. Upon moving from Salinas to Stockton in 1986, she took on the role of care giver, caring for children, special needs, and seniors before retiring in 2002. After retiring, Shirley relocated to Barstow where she met her love Richard Schmalzbach, the man who she spent the rest of her life with. Shirley expressed herself through poetry and was an accomplished poet, having been published numerous times. Shirley is survived by her sons, Scott Woods (Michelle) of Barstow, Chris Vaughn (Tanja) of Barstow; seven grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons, Rick Burkett (Bonnie) of Florida, and Jeff Burkett (Karen) of Florida. A memorial service is planned in Escondido, Calif., at a later date.
