Butman, Elinor K. - Gloucester
Elinor K. Butman, 98, a longtime summer resident of Rockport, MA and Marco Island, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Addison Gilbert Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Watertown on May 16, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William and Edith Olson. Raised in Waltham, she graduated from Waltham High School in 1935 and Simmons College, Class of 1939. She met her husband, Paul, in high school where they attended the junior prom and have been together ever since. This past April, they celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. As the wife of an Air Force officer, Elinor moved 16 times over her lifetime and lived in various locations throughout the country. But home is where your heart is and she truly loved spending her summers in Rockport. She could often be found doing her favorite things - gardening, sewing, needlepoint and sharing a beer with her husband every day at noon on the front porch of their cottage on Long Beach. As a home economics major in college, she also loved to cook. Elinors hospitality was legendary, and you were lucky indeed to be included in any of her many dinners. Her grandchildren were known to fight over the last piece of her blueberry pie or ginger bread. Her prowess in the home was famous, but it was her gentle, nurturing spirit that endeared her to so many. She is survived by her husband, Col. Paul M. Butman and four children, daughter, Karen L. Ressetar and her husband J.P. of Castle Rock, CO; daughter, Dianne B. Meeker and her husband Edmund of Rockport; son, Paul M. Butman Jr. and his wife Sharon Lake of Gloucester and son, Robert E. Butman and his wife Joan of New Canaan, CT. Elinor had 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren who adored her and looked forward to spending time together at Long Beach each summer. Family was always the most important part of her life, and she enjoyed being surrounded by them every summer. Elinors funeral will be a private family service at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham, MA. There will be a celebration of her life with a brunch at Bass Rocks Golf Club at 11:00 am on Sunday August 2, 2015. All friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Simmons Scholarship Fund at Simmons College, c/o Advancements, 300 The Fenway, Boston, MA 02115 or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. For guestbook and online condolences, please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com
