James Doherty Sr. Obituary
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, July 22nd, in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church in Waltham for Mr. James J. Doherty, Sr., of Windham, New Hampshire, formerly of Waltham. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington. Mr. Doherty died on Thursday, July 18, 2013. He was 86. Jim was born in Cambridge on March 18, 1927, a son of the late James and Agnes (McDevitt) Doherty. After graduating from Cambridge Rindge Technical High School he earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. He began his career in engineering and drafting positions with Stone & Webster, Jackson Moreland and the MBTA. He was a field construction and store planning engineer for the Stop and Shop Company and finished his career as the director of engineering for Grossman's Inc. During World War II he served with the United States Naval Air Corp as a combat air crewman. On September 6, 1952 he married Geraldine Conway and throughout their marriage their devotion to each other was extraordinary. Geraldine died in May of 1991. Jim loved spending time with his family and had an affinity for Irish music. He leaves his children James J. Doherty, Jr., and his wife, Kathleen, of Morristown, New Jersey, Janet M. Shea and her husband, Frank, of Oakville, Ontario, Joanne M. Vignos and her husband, Andre, of Windham, New Hampshire and John J. Doherty and Anne-Marie Duffy, of Natick; his grandchildren Kaitlin, Erin and Ryan Doherty, F.X., Mo, Jimmy and Patrick Shea, Elizabeth and Conor Doherty and Rachel and Sarah Vignos and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John and Daniel Doherty, Katherine Lavery and Mary Thompson.
