Dr. GEORGE LOEB  
Dr. George Loeb was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1931 and he died on Monday evening September 14, 2015. His parents were Ukrainian/Russian immigrants who seized the American dream; his mother became a teacher and his father, a lawyer. The family barely scraped by during the depression. After High School, George was accepted at CCNY where tuition was almost free, majoring in chemistry and physics. He studied polymers and the mechanism of blood clotting at Cornell University, graduating with a PhD in 1958. After completing a fellowship at NIH, he took a job as a chemist working for the Navy, tricking barnacles into declining berths on Navy ships, allowing the ships to run at full speed and save fuel at the same time. Retirement after 30 years with the Navy led to a new career as an environmental adviser to the EPA. Through the years he also advised Cub and Boy Scouts, helped run the Sycamore Island Canoe Club and the yearly Whitewater races down the Potomac River. He was an active hiker, canoeist and conservationist. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Bethesda Jewish Congregation, 6601 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD 20817.
