HELEN GOLDENTHAL Obituary


GOLDENTHAL HELEN L. GOLDENTHAL Helen L. Goldenthal passed away at the age of 93 on May 4, 2013. She was born on her family farm, near Gilman, Iowa. Her parents were Russell Jennings Bales and Ollie Belle Grosvenor. Besides her normal farm and school activities, Helen raised Hereford show cattle including several National and State Champions which financed her education at the University of Minnesota and Kahler School of Nursing (Mayo Hospital). In 1943 she volunteered for World War II active overseas duty in the US Army Nurse Corps for four campaigns in the SW Pacific and Philippines. At Fort Leonard Wood she met Mitchel Goldenthal whom she married at the Presidio of San Francisco in 1951. Subsequently, she volunteered for Korean War duty in frontline combat surgery during three campaigns. She is a Bronze Star recipient for service during the Korean War. After honorable discharge, Helen actively worked in community services. She served as the president of clubs at Ft Huachuca, AZ, Ft. Belvoir, VA, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Carlisle Barracks, PA, Ft. Monmouth, NJ, and Ft. Sam Houston, TX. She worked in community services helping all needy personnel especially military dependents and always had a cheerful smile although her husband was often absent on duty all over the world including a tour in Vietnam. After her husband's retirement from the US Army, Helen participated fully in community affairs of The City of Hill Country Village (an enclave of San Antonio, Texas) serving on the Board of Adjustment and Zoning Commission. She was elected to the City Council in 1982 and continued to be active in the Hill Country Village affairs. She was also a member of the Fort Sam Houston Women's Golf Association, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She is survived by her husband, Col. Mitchel Goldenthal (US Army, Ret.), of Hill Country Village, Texas, and her daughter, Karen L. Goldenthal, MD, of Bethesda, Maryland. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
