HERBERT COOK Obituary

HERBERT GENE COOK
Herbert Gene Cook of Laurel, MD died April 25, 2014 at the Sanctuary of Holy Cross after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 85. Born October 8, 1928 in Iola, KS, he was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, maintaining and repairing radar and communications sites. After leaving the service, he performed similar work nationwide for the Bendix Corporation before settling in the Maryland suburbs and starting his own drywall contracting business. He brought to life an infectious, positive personality that thrived on making other people happy. He took particular pleasure in regaling audiences of one or 100 with his endless collection of jokes and stories. Next to joke-telling, his greatest passion was being at the race track, or rolling the dice at some casino or another, or being anywhere you could lay down a bet on something.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Josephine "Jess" Schmalz Cook of Minot, ND. He is survived by daughters Lonita Waybright (Russell) of Edgewater, MD and Lisa Brady (Joe) of Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren Bridgett Simon (Schemerth) of Columbia, MD; Caitlin Brady of Silver Spring, Meradith Waybright of Edgewater, Brendan Brady of Silver Spring, Jillian Waybright of Edgewater; great-grandchildren Josephine and Perry Simon of Columbia, and niece Debora Centerfeit of Citrus Springs, FL. A memorial Celebration of Herb's Life will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 10 a.m. to noon for family and friends at the Central Parke at Victoria Falls clubhouse off Contee Rd. in Laurel, MD. Interment will be at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery.
