Sister M. FRANCIS CLARE, CSC (Frances Adele Ugast)
Passed away on April 15, 2013, at the retirement home of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, St. Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, IN. A lifelong Washingtonian, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Susie W. Ugast. She attended Blessed Sacrament School and Holy Cross Academy, and received a B.A. from Dunbarton College in education and a master's degree from New York University in early childhood education. Sister Francis Clare served as principal in several Catholic schools, and founded early childhood education centers in Alexandria, VA and Raleigh, NC. She was an avid reader and a passionate sports fan, especially of the Washington Redskins, whose games she would attend whenever possible. She is survived by her Sisters of the Holy Cross, her brother Judge Fred B. Ugast (Mary), six nieces and nephews, and 14 grand-nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass and interment were held at St. Mary's Convent, with a Memorial Mass at Saint Angela Hall, Kensington, MD, at a later date. The family requests donations be made in her memory to the SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS FUND FOR THE POOR at Bertrand Hall, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
