Of Fairfax City, VA on December 14, 2013 after a long illness. Ann Powel was born in Orange, NJ and moved to the Chevy Chase at age 2. Ann was a committed elementary school teacher, a tireless environmental and political activist, and an artist who specialized in water-based oils and watercolors. She obtained degrees from Wellesley College, George Washington University and George Mason University. She exhibited paintings in competitive shows at the Circle Gallery in Annapolis and at the Unitarian Church in Rochester, NY. Ann is survived by her husband, R. Christian Jones, professor at George Mason University; her sister Lonnie Cotter of Crugers, NY and her brother Samuel F. Powel, III of Melbourne, Florida as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Peter's in the Woods Episcopal Church, Fairfax Station, VA followed by a reception at the Mason Inn, 4352 Mason Pond Dr., Fairfax, VA 22030 beginning at 2:30 p.m.. All are invited to both the service and the reception.
