Of Culpeper, Virginia formerly of Lanham, Maryland, departed this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born June 1, 1947 to the late Oscar and Melvina Beale and was lovingly adopted and raised by the late Lora Jackson of Gordonsville, Virginia. Mr. Jackson graduated from A.G. Richardson High School in Louisa, Virginia and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in the elite Green Beret. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville and currently the Free Union Baptist Church in Culpeper. He retired in 2010 after serving as director of operations and transportation for over thirty years with S. Freedman and Sons of Landover, Maryland.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Hortense Hinton-Jackson; three step-children, Shani Hinton, Lt. Col. Adisa Hinton (Daramia) and Azim Hinton; one granddaughter, Zhana Tinkler; eight step- grandchildren, one sister, Vivian Townsell (Curtis); a sister-in-law, Gloria Beale; devoted godchildren, John H. Griggs, Jr. and Deanna Griggs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of devoted friends.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Arthur Jackson, Jr. and a brother, Oscar Beale, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Free Union Baptist Church in Culpeper with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Calvin E. Lawrence will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening August 22, 2013 at the church.
