ELLEN KELLEHER PETERSON  

On February 13, 2013, after a long illness. Born in Worcester, MA, she was the second of eight children. Attended Trinity College, Washington, DC, received her B.A. from Emannuel College and completed studies at Katherine Gibbs School, both in Boston, MA. She was a schoolteacher in both Shrewsbury and Newton, MA school systems, before moving to the Washington area in 1969.
 
She leaves two adult children, Molly Peterson of Chevy Chase, MD and Bill Peterson of Silver Spring, MD. She predeceases seven brothers and sisters, including Polly Sturm (John) of Chevy Chase, MD. She also leaves 14 nieces and nephews, and seven great-nieces and nephews. Her 26 year marriage to Gordon Peterson ended in divorce.
A breast cancer survivor, she was involved in many local volunteer activities, including Christ Child Society, Project HOPE, The Best of Washington, Children's Inn at NIH, Stone Ridge School, The Lab School of Washington, The White House Correspondence Office, Daffodils and Diamonds, and Hoe'n Hope Garden Club. She was also a member of The Georgetown Club, and Columbia Country Club, where she was an avid tennis player.
 
Calling hours will be held at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Friday, February 15 from 5 to 8 p.m., in the Parish Center Chapel, and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada Street, NW, on Saturday, February 16. Interment will be at a later date in Worcester, MA.
