Of Springfield, Virginia, and formerly of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013 at home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter Joseph Verdin. Devoted mother of Peter J. Verdin, Jr. (Patty) of Seattle, WA; Stephanie Verdin O'Mara (Dennis) of Annapolis, MD; Rene M. Leader (James) of Luxembourg; John M. Verdin (Susan) of Lovettsville, VA; James A. Verdin (Georgette) of Boston, MA; Gregory P. Verdin (Janell) of Severn, MD; Thomas E. Verdin (Amy) of Springfield, VA and Andrea L. You (Allen) of Huntington Beach, CA. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Florence de Goede was born in Los Angeles and received her teaching degree from UCLA. In 1945, she accepted a teaching position in Anchorage, Alaska where she met and married Peter Verdin, her husband of 52 years. In their early years they loved to ski, fish, ice skate, dance and play badminton. Later they were avid gardeners and loved to hunt flea markets for treasures. The Verdins relocated to Bethesda, Maryland where Florence taught at Sidwell Friends Lower School and was active in the Edgemoor community. In 2003, Florence moved to Greenspring Village in Springfield, VA where she made many wonderful friends, spent hours volunteering, taught sign language class and became a Wii bowling champion.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 20 at The Country Club of Fairfax, 5110 Ox Road, Fairfax, VA from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21 at the Greenspring Village Chapel, 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
