GERTRUDE ELIZABETH RIESZ  

On Sunday, March 17, 2013, of Bethesda, MD, at the age of 94. Beloved wife of Dr. Peter Riesz, loving mother of Carol Nina, David Andrew, and Steven Donald; and grandmother of Kate Smith and Justin Riesz. Gertrude was born on October 10, 1918 to Virginia Nuckols Bray, a member of the DAR, and Archie Wilmot Bray, a professor of biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Gertrude attended Emma Willard high school in Troy, and graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in political science. During World War II, she worked at GE in the graphical arts department. After the end of World War II, she moved to New York and worked as a secretary at the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, and subsequently at the New York Herald Tribune. She married Dr. Peter Riesz in June, 1953. Her husband was a post-doctoral fellow at Penn State University, Brookhaven National Lab, and Argonne National Lab, where she worked in graphical arts departments. After Dr. Riesz moved to the National Cancer Institute, NIH in 1958, she was employed for many years as a secretary to Dr. Gold at the National Institute of Mental Health, NIH while raising her three children. She retired from NIH in 1996.
