Passed away July 26, 2013, at Alexandria Hospital after a life well lived. Helen was born July 5th 1913 in Wakeeney, Kansas to Charles and Faith Hille, a "delayed firecracker," she often exclaimed! Helen attended Trego County High School and later Stevens College, located in Missouri. Her grandfather, in the 1880's, rode on horseback to western Kansas to a spot near Wakeeney after his graduation from Purdue University as a pharmacist. He was on his way to the Colorado. Her grandfather later started the Trego County Bank in Wakeeney which Helen's father, Charlie, as he was known, eventually presided. Helen married George W. Baughman on July 2, 1938. They had three children, Barbara Ann, Susan Jane and Charles. Helen is survived by her son, Charles. The family lived in Kansas until 1951, Atlanta, Georgia 1951-58, Alexandria, VA, 1958-67 and, Bangkok, Thailand from 1967-70. In 1970 the couple returned to Alexandria where they remained. George and Helen extensively traveled throughout the US and around the globe, visiting every continent except for Africa and Antarctica. They were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church located in Alexandria, VA. Helen was an active member of PEO for over 75 years. PEO is a philanthropic educational organization specifically chartered for educating women. She loved bridge, flower arranging and, was inspired by the subtly within nature. She often spoke of her life on the "high plains" of Kansas which nurtured this love for nature. Helen lived at Goodwin House in Alexandria for 13 years and in addition to Charles is survived by her nephew Dick Van Steenburgh and his wife, Mary of Fort Worth, Texas and many, many devoted friends. A memorial service for Helen will be held at Goodwin House Alexandria on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. There will be a reception following the memorial service.
