Hildegard Manitsas died on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at her home in McLean, VA after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Army Brigadier General Nikitas C. Manitsas, 29 days earlier on March 26, 2014.
Hildegard Wessel Manitsas was born in Berlin, Germany on February 9, 1920, and was a graduate of Humboldt University and the Free University of Berlin, where she obtained a medical degree. She completed post-graduate medical studies at New York University, with specialties in surgery and anesthesiology. Board certified, Dr. Manitsas practiced anesthesiology for more than 30 years and was associated with the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Although she had no children of her own, Dr. Manitsas was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with their wishes, the couple will be buried together at Arlington National Cemetery later this fall.
