"Jim", USMC (Ret.)  

Colonel James "Jim" Berry Townsend, 80, of Fairfax, died Saturday, August 31, 2013, after a brief illness, at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, VA. He is the son of the late Mary and Harding Townsend and spent most of his childhood in Spokane, WA.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Miiller Townsend; daughter Beth Paul (husband, Brad) of Groton, MA; son, Michael Townsend (wife, Jeanette), of Oak Hill, VA; and brother Richard Townsend of Ann Arbor, MI. Also surviving are his five grandsons, Andrew Townsend, Noah Paul, Chris Townsend, Cody Paul and John Townsend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
On one very event filled week in June 1956, Jim graduated from the University of Idaho, married Betty Miller and was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Jim served two deployments in the Vietnam War and served tours of duty in Washington, DC; Oahu, Hawaii, Dayton, OH; Norfolk, VA; Paris, France, and Okinawa, Japan. He retired in 1985 after serving three years at Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps, Henderson Hall, Arlington, VA, followed by three years at Marine Corps Base Quantico. His family is very proud of his service to our country and are honored by his decorations and awards that include Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat "V", Meritious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and several others.
Interment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery and a Service will be held at a later date.
