James Frederick MacDonald of Lake Ridge, VA, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children, Mary, Jamie, Rob and Tom; and four grandchildren, Thomas, Alec, Christopher and Ryan. He is also survived by many relatives and friends. After studying aeronautical and electrical engineering in college and serving in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, Jim joined the Army's Civilian Personnel division, the beginning of a career that lasted more than 40 years. He served as Civilian Personnel Officer for the Army's civilian staff in a many locations, including postings in Germany, France and Hawaii. His roles in Europe included serving as the Civilian Personnel Officer for the Berlin Brigade where he worked with British and French counterparts across the allied occupation zones. In 1968 he moved to the Army's Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii, working with employees in many countries including Japan and Vietnam. His final position before retirement in 1987 was as the Civilian Personnel Officer for the Army Materiel Command, where his group provided civilian personnel oversight to numerous Army locations, including maintenance and supply depots, procurement centers and proving grounds throughout the US as well as some locations overseas. A memorial service will be held at Westminster at Lake Ridge retirement community on Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.
