KEVIN M.SHEA, MAJOR USMC
On Tuesday, September 14, 2004, MAJOR KEVIN SHEA died from injuries received due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. At the time Kevin was the Communications Information Systems Officer assigned to Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA.
Kevin was a 1989 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Upon graduation, he accepted a commission as a Marine Second Lieutenant. In 1991, during the First Gulf War, he participated in combat operations to retake Kuwait. He was then selected for duty with the First Force Reconnaissance Company. In 1995, he was assigned to the Marine Force United States Central Command. His next tour was to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterejy, CA, where
he received a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He then was appointed as an instructor in Electrical Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. The Naval Academy Class of 2003 selected him to be an honorary graduate.
Kevin was the recipient of several military decorations and award, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Liberation Medal Kuwait and the Expert Rifleman Badge. He held a jumpmaster rating as a Marine parachutist and was qualified as a combatant SCUBA diver.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Amy, and their two children, Brenna and Michael, of Temecula, CA; his parents, William and Eileen Shea, of Washington, DC; his brothers, Tom Shea of Germantown, MD and Dan Shea of Seattle, WA; his grandmother, Ellen Dee of Bowie, MD, and numerous aunts, uncles and other relatives.
On Wednesday, September 29, at 12 noon, the Naval Academy will have a memorial service for Kevin in the Naval Academy Chapel. At that service Kevin will receive his posthumous promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, the Bronze Star with Valor medal and the Purple Heart.
On Wednesday evening, September 29, from 6p.m. to 8 p.m., the family will receive visitors at the Robert J. Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22003.
On Thursday, September 30, the funeral will be held at Arlington National Cemetery beginning at 12:45 p.m. with the Catholic Service in the Ft. Myers Memorial Chapel.
