WAGNER MARY BURKE WAGNER (Age 86) Died on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, VA. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Professor Robert R. Wagner on September 15, 2001. Mary was born in Los Angeles, CA on July 17, 1927, and at an early age moved to Texas with her parents. She graduated from the University of Texas
, Austin. After her family settled in Baltimore, MD, she was for many years the Registrar at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where she was held in very high regard for her exemplary organizational skills. She met her husband, Dr. Robert R. Wagner, there and they married on March 23, 1967. In July of that year, they moved to Charlottesville, where Dr. Wagner assumed the Chair of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Mary immersed herself in activities of the School of Medicine and the Charlottesville community. With her keen intelligence, graceful social skills and caring heart, she enriched every community in which she lived. She was a tireless supporter and innovator in civic and University groups. She assisted Dr. Thomas Hunter (former Vice President for Medical Affairs of the UVA School of Medicine) and Professor Joseph F. Fletcher (Visiting Medical Ethicist) in creating the Medical Center Hour, a public forum on Medicine and Society, which continues to the present time. She was also Editorial Assistant for Professor Fletcher. She was an active member and supporter of the League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood, Meals on Wheels, the local Democratic Party and many others. She was a devout member of St. Paul's Memorial Church. Perhaps her greatest contribution to the community was her determined efforts to start an adult learning program for seniors in the area, which led to the very successful formation of what is now the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia (OLLI). Mary and Bob traveled extensively, returning often to their favorite places. She maintained their friendships in all the places they lived and visited. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the University of Virginia Cemetery, Charlottesville, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Robert R. Wagner Fellowship Fund, which Bob set up for the support of young scientists in training for cancer research. Donations may be sent c/o the University of Virginia Health System Development Office, P.O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA, 22908.
