BARTON Dr. SHARI BARTON Dr. Shari Barton, 77, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully at home on January 15, 2014 surrounded by her loving children, Ted and Stacia, and her companion dog Cassie. She succumbed to breast cancer after courageously battling the disease for five years. Dr. Barton was born in New York City, NY in 1936. Married twice, her marriages to Thurston Teele and Robert Kharasch ended in amicable divorces. Dr. Barton received an AB Political Science from Mount Holyoke College, earned an MS in Journalism from Boston University, and an MA and Doctor of Philosophy PHD in Public Administration from The University of Maryland. Her greatest academic love was her time spent at Hunter College High in New York City. Dr. Barton moved to Washington, DC in the late 1950's and quickly became an integral part of her adopted city - serving as President of the Forest Hills Citizen Association, Membership Chair of the Committee of 100 of the Federal City, Chairman of the Council of Governments Election Task Force, Chair of the DC Board of Elections and Ethics under Mayor Walter Washington, on the Board of Appeals and Review under Mayor Barry, and on the DC Real Estate Commission under both Mayor Fenty and Mayor Gray. A life-long Democrat and labor liberal, Dr. Barton began her political career at the age of 18 when she interned during the summer of 1954 at the Democratic National Committee. She returned the following summer as a paid employee ($45 per week). She later worked for five years at the AFL-CIO and two years at AFSCME. In the late 1970's, Dr. Barton showed her entrepreneurial talents when she and her then 19 year old daughter created and ran Camp Carefree a "kiddie camp for grownups" which was covered by numerous print media outlets, including People Magazine, and many local and national television shows, including NBC Nightly News, and The Dinah Shore Show. In the mid 1980s, Dr. Barton transitioned to a successful career in real estate and was active in the field until her death. In this capacity she served several terms on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO) and chaired some of its working committees. She also served on two committees of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). A founding member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA), Shari had a lifelong love of animals and passionately supported many animal protection agencies. Dr. Barton is survived by her beloved children, Edward Teele (wife Suzy) and Stacia Lindsey Teele. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Dawn, Emily, Sam, Devon, Suzanna, and Bennet, her two step-grandchildren Michael and Lindsay, her cousin Ira Silverberg and many other loving family members and friends. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service in the near future by personal invitation. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Gateway for Cancer Research.
