'OGERS Col. THOMAS J. ROGERS Colonel Thomas J. Rogers died on April 4, 2013 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, TX. He was born in 1920 in Houston, TX. He graduated from Reagan High School where he played football and participated in a victory over Mexico Polytechnic University in Mexico City in 1937. After two years at the University of Texas
in Austin, he entered the Army
Air Force in 1940 anticipating the entry of the USA in WWII. He married Ruth Mae Van Hekken in August of 1941 in Houston, TX. At the end of WWII, Tom joined the US Air Force
in the Strategic Air Command. Tom and his family lived in the Washington area while he worked at the Pentagon and between some assignments. In his 30 year career his assignments included five years in Training Command, seven- teen years in the Strategic Air Command, four years in the Pentagon, and fifteen months in the Pacific Air Force. Some of his notable assignments included Commander 26th Bomb Squadron 11th Bomb Wing, Carswell AFB in B-36 aircraft; Commander at Gray AFB, Ft Hood, TX, Chief of Operations Division Hq. 8th Air Force; Deputy Commander of Operations 380th Bomb Wing, Plattsburgh AFB, NY in B-47 aircraft; Commander Moron Air Base near Seville, Spain; Assistant to the Inspector General Air Force Headquarters; and Commander of the Chiang Chang Kong Air Base, Taiwan. While assigned to the Pentagon, he was President of the Protestant Men of the Pentagon. Some of the awards he received include The Legion of Merit, Air Metal, three Commendations Metals, Adopted Son of Seville, Spain, Metal of Justice of the Republic of China, and Alpha Sigma Delta Scholastic Award of the University of Maryland. Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Rogers; his second wife, Winfrey Howard Rogers; and his daughter, Carole Rogers Hemingway. Survivors include his third wife, Charlene Young Rogers; his son, Thomas J Rogers, Jr. and wife, Sharron of Austin, TX; his son-in law, Bruce S. Hemingway of Herndon, VA; two grandsons, a great- grandson and granddaughter. Interment with Full Military Honors will be at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, April 11, 2013.
