Of Dunkirk, MD died in Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. Although born in Alabama, Mr. Barnes was a Washington, DC resident for most of his life. He was a graduate of Southwestern University. He served proudly during World War II as in infantry officer, and was severely wounded in the Philippine Islands. Mr. Barnes was employed for 40 years by the federal government, serving in all three branches. He was well known for his devotion to his work. At the time of his retirement in 1976, he was the Chief of Personnel for the United States Court System.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his son, William Barnes, Jr. of Dunkirk; son-in-law, William Sanford of Edgewood, Washington and three grandchildren, Valkyrie Barnes, and Eric and Amy Sanford. His first wife, Betty Barnes, second wife, Estelle L. Barnes, daughter, Patricia Sanford and daughter-in law, Joy Barnes predeceased him.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, September 23, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Raymond-Wood Funeral Home, 10684 Southern Maryland Blvd., (Rt. 4 S), Dunkirk, MD, 20754. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Rev. Alisa Lasater Waibo will officiate. Interment, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, MD will immediately follow the service.
