CAROLE COHEN Obituary

CAROLE GOLDSTEIN COHEN
Carole Goldstein Cohen died peacefully at her home in Washington, DC in the early morning of April 23, 2013, after a short illness. Carole was the beloved wife of Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., mother of Deborah Rappaport (Andy), Joel Cohen (Mavis Prall Cohen), David Cohen (Suzy Friedman Cohen), grandmother of Rebecca Rappaport, Sara Rappaport, Leah Rappaport, Sam Cohen, Julia Cohen, Zeke Cohen, Rachel Cohen, and Elizabeth Prall. A native of New York City, Carole Cohen grew up in Detroit, and lived in Boston, Chicago, Long Island and, most recently, in Washington, D.C. and Chilmark, MA. Carole graduated from Wellesley College in 1957 and was an active alumnae throughout her life. Carole had an insatiable intellect and worked tirelessly on behalf of her communities. She spent over 35 years in university advancement work and non-profit management. She was Vice President for External Affairs at the University of Massachusetts, Associate Chancellor for Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Vice President for University Affairs at SUNY Stony Brook, President of the Stony Brook Foundation, and President of the American Kidney Fund. Earlier in her career she was New England Regional Director of Common Cause. She also served on several non-profit boards, including Iona Senior Services and Green Spaces for DC in Washington, Martha's Vineyard Community Services and the Martha's Vineyard Donors Collaborative. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in Carole's memory, please give either to Iona Senior Services in Washington, D.C. or Martha's Vineyard Community Services. A Memorial Service will be held on May 12.

Carole embraced life with gusto, with passion, vision and power. She read widely, thought deeply, shared generously.. As high as her standards were in whatever she did, she was a regular gal, one I looked up to and enjoyed knowing. She will be missed.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to Carole recently in my development role at our small non profit. I knew I would learn so much from her. She made us laugh from that very first meeting and I can imagine what an impact she made in every endeavor she undertook. My heart breaks for all of her friends and family and i was so sorry to hear of her passing.

Carole and I met at Camp Arbutus near Traverse City Michigan so many years ago. She was a wonderful cabin mate then and friend for many years as we were "growing up"in the Detroit area. It was such a joy to reconnect with her not long ago in DC. Carole was a very special person and always ahead of her time. She will be greatly missed. Susan Tuttle Darrow, Ann Arbor, Mich.

It was a great pleasure to work with Carole, when we did so as part of the MVHC board. I loved her no-nonsense quality; she certainly had strong opinions. I enjoyed debating her. You couldn't slip one by her.

I loved Carole's warmth and her sense of humor. She exuded such a strong positive attitude. I don't think I ever heard her complain. I wish we had spent more time together. I will miss her.

Carole was my neighbor, friend, and mentor in making our city a better place to live. Thanks to her, my big hairy audacious goal of renovating our Mitchell Park was realized. She taught me everything I know about fundraising. In just the past couple of months I had somehow convinced her to join me on the board of FRESHFARM Markets, and since I am the President, she graciously agreed to take the helm of the Development Committee. I was so excited to be working with her again. I recently decided to seek my first paying job in 25 years, and Carole was holding my hand through the resume building, job interviews, etc...Carole was such an important person in my life, and I am just devastated by her sudden death. My thoughts are with her beloved family.

It was always special when Carole would call and say..."I'll be on the Vineyard next week..let's have dinner."
Sadly, those calls will never come again.

Carole was always a dynamic part of our Wellesley alumnae group. Her activities in many areas show that her focus was on others, not herself. I always enjoyed seeing her at college reunions. My sympathies go to Jordan, her children and grands. Carole's friends will miss her. Vitaline O'Toole

This sad news makes me see more clearly that life is too short and getting shorter by the year reminds us all of our old and very dear friends who we have not kept up with thinking I am sure, that there will be time. Now we know...there won't always be time.
You are held in my heart.
